Our Story
With it's origins dating back to the turn of the 20th Century, dbc foodservice has risen from it's humble beginnings, through two world wars, a depression and numerous recessions and retail revolutions, to become one of the largest UK foodservice organisations, and our journey has only just started!
Past history...
Founded in 1902 by Charles Hansen, with just four staff, the Danish Bacon Company only just survived a maize shortage during the First World War allowing it to feed it's stock.
Always having strong benevolent values, in the 1920's the company became one of the first UK employers to introduce staff canteens and during the depression, dbc distributed free bacon parcels to those less fortunate of it's community, including some of the many unemployed.
In the 30's the company began the first of its many entrepreneurial ventures, diversifying away from its core meat products into other food products such as eggs, cheese and butter.
Around the time of the outbreak of the Second World War, the company headquarters moved out of London to Welwyn Garden City, where it remains to this day. Following soon after is the death of the dbc founder, Charlie Hansen, aged 74.
The 'swinging' 50's and 60's saw dbc become a public limited company, which would allow investment into the first of many new nationwide depots. Beginning with Manchester, Brentwood and Birmingham, and following in the 80's and 90's with the first of many custom-built branches in Newmarket and a new Southern hub being created in Petersfield.
...to present day
In the 90's, the dbc foodservice brand, as it is known today, was created. Following shortly behind was the launch of our first own label dbc range.
With a continued investment in new depot locations, a Northern hub branch was opened in Rotherham in 2000, and this was quickly followed with our first foray into new technology, becoming one of the first UK foodservice organisations to launch an online ordering facility.
Celebrating a centenary year soon after - a first in the foodservice industry - the growth to acquire greater share in more business sectors saw us being awarded the Ministry of Defence Worldwide Food Supply Contract in 2006.
And so we reach the present day. Following an acquisition of dbc foodservice in 2009 by WPD Limited, a company owned by Malcolm Walker, Andrew Pritchard and Tarsem Dhaliwal, our rise in the UK foodservice industry begins it's next stage.
Now operating from 12 strategic locations nationwide, all with state-of-the art multi-temperature capabilities, we distribute daily to the UK's largest, national public and private sector accounts, and thousands of independents, from a fleet of delivery vehicles, all carrying the latest European eco-credentials.
But it is our attitude and approach which makes the difference and which you will receive from all 1,000 of our staff members nationwide, quite simply it is what dbc foodservice stands for...
...excellent service and value for money
